MATERIALS
- A Shogi board (9x9 grid)
- 20 wedge-shaped pieces per player
HOW TO PLAY
1
Set up pieces in the standard starting formation across the first three rows on each side.
2
Pieces move in specific patterns depending on type, similar in spirit to Western chess.
3
Captured pieces are kept by the capturing player and can be dropped back onto the board as their own piece on a later turn.
4
Pieces reaching the far three rows may be promoted, gaining new movement options.
5
The game ends in checkmate, when a king cannot escape capture.
