HOW TO PLAY

Hollow out a turnip carefully, leaving a thick shell, then carve a simple face or pattern into the side.

Fit a small candle or light into the hollowed center and attach a string handle for carrying.

Gather with other lantern-carriers as dusk falls.

Light the lanterns and walk together in a slow procession through the neighborhood or town, often singing along the way.

Admire everyone's carved designs as the procession passes through the darker streets.
6
Finish the walk together at a gathering point, comparing lanterns before heading home.
