Deal eight cards to each of the four players, seated in two partnerships across from one another.

The trump suit is chosen either by turning a card or by players bidding to select it, depending on the house rules in use.

Trump cards follow a special ranking, with the jack and nine of trumps outranking all other cards in the game.

Players must follow suit if possible, must play a higher trump if a trump has already been played to the trick and they cannot follow suit, and the highest trump or highest card of the suit led wins each trick.

Partnerships add up the point value of cards in their won tricks, with a bonus for winning the final trick, and the partnership with the higher total wins the hand.
