Janggi
- A janggi board with intersecting lines and two palace squares marked with diagonals
- 16 octagonal pieces per side marked with Chinese characters
Board of 9 vertical and 10 horizontal lines, pieces played on the intersections, with a marked palace at each end.
Set up each side's general, guards, chariots, cannons, horses, elephants, and soldiers on their starting intersections, mirrored across the board.
Move pieces along the board lines according to their type: chariots move straight any distance, cannons must jump over exactly one piece to move or capture, horses move one step straight then one step diagonal, and soldiers move forward or sideways one point.
The general and guards are confined to the palace, moving one point along its marked lines.
Capture an opposing piece by landing your piece on its intersection, following your piece's normal movement rules.
Declare check when the general is threatened, and the opponent must respond immediately.
Checkmate the opposing general, leaving it with no legal escape, to win the game.
