MATERIALS
- An ice yacht or DIY sail-rig on skates/blades
- A frozen lake or rink with steady wind
- Marker buoys or flags for the course
MEASUREMENTS
Course marked with buoys spaced several hundred feet apart around a triangular or oval loop.
HOW TO PLAY
1
Set out marker buoys to define a loop course on the frozen surface.
2
Each sailor sits or kneels low in their yacht and adjusts the sail to catch the wind.
3
On the starting signal, sailors steer their yachts around the marked course using the sail and a small tiller.
4
Sailors trim the sail in and out to change speed and must maneuver around each buoy in order.
5
The first yacht to complete the required number of laps and cross the finish line wins.
6
Race organizers check ice thickness and wind conditions carefully before racing begins.
