Haxey Hood

Villagers gather in an open field and the hood is thrown into the middle of the crowd to start play.

Players form a tightly packed mass called the "sway" around the hood and push against each other, but nobody is allowed to run with, kick, or throw the hood.

The sway slowly shifts direction as one side gains ground, inching the hood across fields, hedges, and roads toward the village.

Players aim to push the sway toward one of the village's designated pubs.

The hood is judged to have reached its destination once it is forced through the door of a pub, and that pub keeps the hood until the following year.
