HOW TO PLAY
1

Two competitors face each other and grip each other by the shoulders, arms, or a cloth sash tied at the waist, depending on the local style being practiced.

2

At a signal, each wrestler tries to unbalance the other by pulling, pushing, and pivoting the hips, aiming to force any part of the opponent's body other than the feet to touch the ground.

3

Wrestlers are not permitted to strike, kick, or grab below the waist, keeping the contest focused on balance and leverage rather than striking.

4

A match ends the moment one wrestler is thrown, tripped, or forced down, and that wrestler's opponent is declared the winner of the bout.

5

In friendly or festival settings, matches are often held in a best-of-three format, with wrestlers resetting their grip between each fall.

6

Traditionally these matches took place during Makahiki festival gatherings alongside other tests of strength and skill.
