Choose two players to face each other, raise their joined hands, and form an arch representing a bridge.

All the other players form a line and walk in a chain, one after another, passing underneath the raised arch while everyone sings the traditional rhyme together.

On the final word of the rhyme, the two arch players quickly lower their arms to catch whoever happens to be passing underneath at that moment.

The caught player is asked quietly to choose one of two secret options, such as an apple or a pear, which secretly assigns them to one of two hidden teams behind each arch player.

The line keeps moving through the arch and the song repeats until every player has been caught once and sorted onto a team.

Once everyone has a team, the two teams line up and have a friendly tug of war to see which side pulls the other across a middle line.
