Two riders line up at a starting point on a flat, open stretch of ground.

On a signal, both riders race toward a marked finish point far in the distance.

Riders must keep their mount under control and may not interfere with the other rider's horse.

The horse whose nose crosses the finish line first is declared the winner of the race.

For a modern indoor or backyard variant, riders can be replaced by runners racing on foot over the same course.
